STEP 1. From the Applications: Utilities folder you have to launch Disk Utility.

STEP 2. Now you have to choose the drive you would like to format from the list on the left.

STEP 4. Now you have tho choose the format you would like the drive to be in from the Volume Format dropdown.

STEP 5. In the Name field simply enter the title for your volume.

STEP 6. In order to specify how to erase the drive simply press the Security Options button then you can select: Don’t Erase Data, Zero Out Data, 7-Pass Erase, or 35-Pass Erase. After that simply click on the OK button.

STEP 8. Now you will be able to see a popup which will ask you to confirm the format. Now simply click on Erase button. Now you can see a a status bar which shows the progress of your format.

STEP 9. You can see the disk remount in Disk Utility after the format has completed.
