How to Detect and Stop Harmful Processes from Running on Your Computer

Saturday, June 5, 2010

It’s natural that your computer gets affected by various viruses, malwares, spywares or any other harmful malicious codes, if you stay connected to internet and work for hours. Few times they just make your life hell by causing unnecessary headaches and I can put myself as an example as it took me almost 12+ hours to remove a malicious code from my computer. I was not mentally prepared to format the system and hence I tried almost every alternative to remove the code, but finally I managed to remove most instances of it.
It was a malware that got downloaded from somewhere and got installed inside system’s Windows folder as X folder. Initially Avast antivirus detected the threat but could not remove it even after trying boot-time scanning. This malware (I am even not aware of it’s so called ‘name’)  blocked access to major antivirus websites including Norton, AVG, Kaspersky, Avira etc, making you unable to download any antivirus or anti-malware products. It also disabled system restore and booting the system in safe mode.

So, here I thought of making a post on how to detect and kill harmful process from running on your computer. First, we need to detect them and then we will remove them manually.
Detecting Harmful Processes :
  1. Click Alt + Ctrl + Tab buttons on your key board to launch Task Manager
  2. Click on Processes tab to see the list of processes running
  3. If you are familiar with the processes, detect the suspicious process, copy it’s name and make a search on ProcessLibrary
  4. If you are not so advanced, download Process Viewer tool, install on your system and let it examine the processes
If the malware has blocked Task Manager on your system, simply follow the 4th step and view all harmful process. Once you find the harmful processes, kill them using the system task manager. If your task manager has been disabled, follow this post to enable it.
